Most rainforests consist of different layers: the understory just above the ground, the canopy between 20-40 meters above ground, and there are emergent trees that are even higher than that! Each layer is often home to different animals and plants. Even the climate is different in the three layers.

Look below to learn more about the inhabitants of the rainforest.

White-faced Monkey

White-faced monkeys live in small family groups in the rainforest canopy.

Although they sometimes descend to the ground, they spend most of their life in the treetops.

Toucan

Toucans are big, brightly coloured birds with a long beaks.

Their bill helps them pluck fruit off branches that are just out of reach for most other animals.

Vine snake

These snakes are called 'vine snakes' because of their thin bodies - just like vines.

It helps them climb, and makes it easier for them to cross from one branch to another.

Tree frog

Tree frogs have suction cup-like fingers and toes.

They can climb and jump around high above the ground without losing their grip.

Vested anteater

Vested anteaters are great climbers.

You can see them casually walking around on the forest floor, or looking for ants in the crowns of the highest rainforest trees.

Transparent butterfly

Many rainforest butterflies fly around in the understory.

This transparent one is almost invisible in the dark forest interior.

Gecko

Geckos are lizards that have adhesive pads on their hands and feet - just like tree frogs do.

They live on the trunks of very large trees, where they are hard to see because of their camouflage.
